Calling all men – Focus on Men for November

Men ... Tūranga wants you! To coincide with Movember, Tūranga is putting the Focus on Men - calling all men, and everyone else, to come and visit the library in Cathedral Square and experience some special events.

Tūranga will host some special events including a Jonah Lomu PlayStation tournament, a discussion about men and shared sheds, a craft beer demonstration, health and fitness events and visitors can also find out what it takes to race their motorbikes at the Ruapuna track.

CoverThere will also be "Stories of Valour" this Sunday 3 November at 2pm as war veterans recall their wartime experiences, tips on how to sharpen CVs for job hunters, book clubs, and information on delving into history including digital heritage.

Movember New Zealand is dedicated to improving men's health and raises funds by encouraging individuals to grow moustaches during November before shaving them off. Sport Canterbury is dedicated to improving the physical health of Cantabrians so come along to Tūranga's ground floor, He Hononga, on Friday 8 November 10am to 1pm to learn about healthy movement and nutrition and have fun making a smoothie by riding a bike (yes, Sport Canterbury has a smoothie-making bike). That evening, recall the power of the late All Blacks' blockbuster Jonah Lomu, with the PlayStation rugby tournament which starts on Hapori at 5pm. Ring 941-7923 to make a booking.

Feel free to ask library staff about the Haynes Motor Manuals you can access online by using your library card. The online manuals offer instruction on how to repair and maintain many cars and motorcycles. Tūranga will host Motorcycling Canterbury on Saturday 23 November, so come in then to find out about racing your two-wheeled rocket at Ruapuna.

Check out Christchurch City Libraries' Digitial Heritage Collection on Tuakiri | Identity, Level 2 on Tuesday 12 November, and bring any local or family history queries you might have as the staff are experienced in finding answers to those knotty, historical mysteries.

More health and fitness is on the menu for Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 November. YMCA staff will lead a Stretch, Core, Breathe class during the evening of 18 November in the Activity Room on Hapori. Sport Canterbury has a Exercise as Medicine: Prost-FIT class on Hapori the next day. The class is designed to help men who have experienced prostate cancer keep fit. This fun class includes elements of cardio, resistance, boxing, ball activities and dance to improve strength, balance and stamina.

The Brewing Academy will display the intricacies of producing your favourite drop with their craft beer demonstration on the evening of Wednesday 20 November. Join the Christchurch Home Brewers' Association (CHBA) in their first ever open day. The CHBA brings people together using the power of beer. Join the club, learn how to brew, learn about the brewing process and ingredients, and maybe even taste a beer or two. Granville from Brew Academy will be laying down a brew and talking through the process using Grainfather homebrewing equipment. Local home brewers turned professionals will be there to talk about their experiences and their beers, and offer tastings to attendees. Gladfield Malt are coming along to talk about malts and different malt profiles.

On Saturday 23 November, MENZSHED will host a discussion on He Hononga about what their members make and the community projects they contribute to. You want to discuss books ... form a book group? The Book Discussion Scheme can help you join an existing group or form a new one, also on 23 November on He Hononga | Connection, Ground floor.

Sport Canterbury returns to Hapori | Community, Level 1 on Monday 25 November to lead a Live Stronger for Longer session which helps people over 65 years of age improve their strength and balance to help guard against falls and fractures. YMCA staff will lead a circuit class on the same day in the TSB Space on Hapori.

Tūranga's events calendar has more events, dates and times. Note while these events focus on men in “Movember” they are open to everyone to come and enjoy.
