Bookable spaces and meeting rooms at Tūranga

Tūranga is a 5 level modern library at 60 Cathedral Square in central Christchurch. It includes varied spaces for a range of activities with a mixture of small meeting rooms and venues suitable for larger groups. Meeting spaces are available for a variety of social, education and recreational activities.

Study rooms are also available free of charge on a first come, first served basis. Please read the conditions of use for venue hire before making a booking. Please note that Tūranga rooms are not available for regular bookings.

Hours of hire

  • Spark Place: Monday to Friday 8am to 7.45pm; and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4.45pm
  • Meeting Rooms, AV Studio: Monday to Friday 9am to 7.45pm; and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4.45pm
  • TSB Space and Activity Room: Monday to Thursday 9am to 11pm; Friday 9am to 1am; Saturday 10am to 1am; Sunday 10am to 11pm

Please note: All bookings taking place outside of normal library hours require the presence of security guard personnel and a Tūranga venue host. Standard booking times are Monday to Friday 9am - 7.45pm; and Saturday and Sunday 10am - 4.45pm.

The cost of this support staffing is to be paid in addition to the room fee. An event with up to 50 participants requires 1 security guard, 51 to 149 participants requires 2 guards, and 150 or more participants requires 3 guards.

Facilities at Tūranga are not open for bookings on public holidays.

Auaha Hīhī / Spark Place

Spark Place is available for bookings from interested businesses and groups who have a focus on:

The following is supplied, please bring your own extra supplies if needed: 50 cups, 30 glass tumblers, 30 wine glasses, 4 milk jugs, 4 coffee plungers, 1 teapot, 8 water jugs, assorted plates, 1 chopping board and 1 cutlery set with additional teaspoons.

Tautoru / TSB Space

Location: Hapori | Community, Level 1

Capacity: 250 standing / 195 seated (total including performers, audience, crew)

  • Two projectors and screens (can be operated independently or as a pair) that can display from laptop via HDMI digital signage, or streamed content (requires advance notification to configure and test).
  • Wireless camera (can display footage on one or both screens)
  • AV controller for staff use

  • Handheld and lapel microphone
  • Whole-of-room audio

Audio and video can be extended to the adjoining Activity Room.

Where the TSB Space booking is for a social event, you must book the Activity Room at the same time so that you can access the kitchen.

Ngā Purapura / Activity Room

Location: Hapori | Community, Level 1

Capacity: 50 standing / 48 seated (total including performers, audience, crew)

The Activity Room has a kitchen.

  • Interactive projector to project games onto the floor
  • Single projector and screen, that can display from laptop via HDMI cable, digital signage, or streamed content (requires advance notification to configure and test).

You must book this room together with the TSB Space where the TSB Space is booked for a social event (see above for booking information).

Capacity: Seats 4 comfortably, maximum 6.

Wāhi Hui 4.3 / Meeting Room 4.3

Location: Auahatanga | Creativity, Level 4
Capacity: Seats 4 comfortably, maximum 6.

Each meeting room has:

Screen with HDMI connection to enable direct display from a laptop or other device. When using this equipment please do not alter any settings or turn screens off.

Please note: No food or drink is allowed on Tuakiri | Identity, Level 2 including water sipper bottles. Drinking fountains are provided. Please leave food and drink items in your bag or in a locker.

Taupuni Oro/Ataata / Audio/Video Studio

Location:  Auahatanga | Creativity, Level 4

Booking restrictions:

  • Customers under the age of 16 must have a parent or guardian present (except for during YA Open Studio sessions).
  • Studio time is booked in 30 minute increments up to a maximum of three hours (with a minimum booking time of one hour and a maximum of 9 hours per person per month).

Conditions of Hire for Tūranga bookable spaces

You must be over the age of 18 to legally hire a Council Facility.

Health and Safety

Keep fire exits clear at all times.

In the event of an emergency, please follow instructions given by library staff. Do not attempt to walk down the central stairway.

Alcohol

The consumption of alcohol is permitted in this facility.

A special licence may be required if alcohol is part of your event, e.g. if alcohol is being sold, or if your event is ticketed and alcohol will be consumed at the event.

In general, BYO is permitted at private functions such as receptions or birthdays. A special licence generally is not required for these types of events.

For most other events BYO may not be a permitted activity (i.e. is unlawful and prohibited).

Find out more about whether you require a special licence by checking the alcohol licencing information and checking with the Alcohol Licencing Team directly. Please note that a special licence does not authorise BYO.

As the venue hirer and/or event host where alcohol is present at the event, regardless of whether your event requires a special licence or not you still have the responsibility to ensure that you are providing a safe drinking environment at your event. Please read host responsibility guidelines and tips.

You risk having your venue booking cancelled if you do not meet alcohol licencing requirements. Please note that applications for special licences must be made with the Alcohol Licencing Team at least 20 working days before the date of your event and should where possible be made before you advertise your event.

Catering

No organised catering offered, however The Catering Belle is based onsite and can be contacted to cater your event.
