Food and Drink policy

Welcome to Christchurch City Libraries.

We understand that food and drink may contribute to the enjoyment of your visit to the Christchurch City Libraries.  As staff we have a responsibility to manage the consumption of food and drink to protect resources and equipment and also to respect the values of our customers.

Guidelines for consuming food and drink in the libraries

Drinks in spill-proof containers and cold, odour-free food can be consumed in the libraries. This includes food like sandwiches, snack food and rice balls, however please do not consume hot or smelly food in the libraries.

In all Christchurch City Libraries food and drink are not permitted in the following areas:

  • Around library computers, because spilled food or drink damages equipment;
  • Around the Ngā Pounamu Māori collection and Pasifika collection areas in all libraries. These are spaces where cultural knowledge, history and relationships are maintained and developed through the items in the collection and the physical collection area.
  • At Tūranga, on the Tuakiri/Identity floor, Level 2, no food and drink is allowed (including water bottles). This is due to the presence of Ngā Pounamu Māori and Pasifika Collections, as well as the proximity to heritage collections, rare and fragile materials, which need to be protected for future generations.

Please ask staff if you have any questions and we thank you for your consideration.
