Alice Oseman brings ‘Heartstopper’ to Ōtautahi: WORD Christchurch

There was something magical about walking into a room filled with people who had all been waiting for this moment. WORD Christchurch and Hachette Aotearoa New Zealand brought Alice Oseman to Ōtautahi Christchurch as part of her book tour, and fans of all ages came together in the Christ's College auditorium to celebrate a story that has meant so much to so many. Young readers, teenagers with their proud and supportive parents, and older adults who never saw themselves reflected in stories when they were young shared the same space, united by a love for Heartstopper and everything it represents. It was a beautiful reminder of how powerful queer stories can be and a celebration of a journey that continues to inspire people around the world.

MC'd by Ray Shipley, there was a real sense of warmth and lightness throughout the evening. The conversation between Ray and Alice captured so much of what the audience had come to hear, with moments that had the room laughing one minute and reflecting the next. Ray handled these shifts effortlessly, creating a welcoming atmosphere and keeping everyone connected to the conversation. Their energy, thoughtful questions, and engaging presence helped bring the whole event together.

Alice also spoke about some of her favourite moments to create, including Nick and Charlie's first kiss in Volume 1, a scene that remains especially meaningful to many readers. She also reflected on the Paris trip, which proved to be one of the more challenging sections of the series, with multiple characters navigating their own personal struggles and storylines. On top of that, she faced the daunting task of drawing Paris itself. Something she jokingly admitted was far from ideal given her dislike of drawing buildings.

As soon as the floor was opened for questions, a sea of hands shot up across the auditorium, with audience members eagerly hoping to be chosen. The questions that followed were thoughtful, detailed, and often deeply insightful, making it clear that many attendees had come prepared. Allowing plenty of time for audience questions added to the strong sense of community in the room and helped create an intimate atmosphere, despite the size of the venue. Alice approached each question with genuine care and attention, taking the time to provide thoughtful responses and making every person who spoke feel heard.

Alice shared that one of the things that has surprised her most is the extent to which Heartstopper has resonated with readers around the world. What began as a small British queer story, born from her own imagination, has grown into a global phenomenon embraced by people from countless backgrounds and communities. Its success is a testament to the power of storytelling and the human experiences at its core. No matter our culture, ethnicity, or where we call home, stories of love, friendship, identity, and belonging can connect us in meaningful ways. Heartstopper has become a powerful reminder that while our lives may look different, the emotions and experiences that shape us are often shared.

I am sure many Alice Oseman fans will be eagerly anticipating whatever comes next, myself included. Alice shared that she hopes to write another prose novel one day and reflected on how her writing might have changed since the publication of her last novel Loveless in 2020. As both a reader and a fan of her characters and storytelling, I am excited to see how her voice and style have evolved over the years, and where her next creative journey might take her.
