Christmas carols and music
The season of carols culminates with the YMCA Carols by Candlelight, taking place on Christmas Eve Monday 24 December 2018. This year's venue is Victoria Square. This twilight gathering has been delighting Cantabrians and visitors every Christmas Eve since 1947.
Christmas parades and Santa
- Sunday 2 December 2018: Christchurch’s Santa Parade Madras Street (between St Asaph and Kilmore Streets)
- Saturday 8 December 2018: New Brighton Seaside Christmas Parade
- Sunday 9 December 2018: Rangiora Santa Parade
Some malls and shops may have a Santa in store to listen to kids’ gift requests, and having a photo taken on Santa’s knee is a New Zealand tradition.
Lights, decorations and displays
Christchurch shops often decorate their windows and have Christmas displays. Department store Ballantynes is famous for its Christmas window. This year's window is launching on Friday 23 November from 4pm to 5.30pm with jesters, balloon sculpturing, and other fun whānau activities.
Some streets in Christchurch light up as homes are festooned with Christmas lights.
