Matatiki Hornby Centre Opening Day: Friday 19 April 2024
Christchurch's newest pool and library complex opened on Friday 19 April.
Matatiki Hornby Centre was officially opened by Mayor Phil Mauger at a formal ceremony starting at 1pm Friday 19 April. The facility opened to the public from 3pm with the library closing at 6pm. The pools were open until 9.30pm.
Matatiki Hornby Centre community day: Saturday 20 April 10am to 4pm
The opening of Matatiki Hornby Centre was celebrated at a fun-filled community day. The Hits broadcast live onsite throughout the day doing giveaways and offering on-air opportunities to tamariki. There were virtual reality sessions, bookmark making with our in-house laser cutter, scavenger hunts, board games, and arts and crafts. There was sports and kai at Kyle Park.

Staff at Hornby Library are preparing for the big shift to their new premises at Matatiki Hornby Centre, in Kyle Park.
Hornby Library on Goulding Avenue will close at 6pm on Thursday 28 March and will reopen at the new pool and library community centre on Friday 19 April, from 3pm. The customer services desk at Goulding Avenue will remain open until 5pm Friday 19 April, before also shifting across to Matatiki.

The new library being built at Matatiki Hornby Centre will include a bookable recording space, editing equipment and other creative resources. The audio/video space will be equipped with professional-grade video, sound and image editing software, and hardware including microphones, sound mixing boards and computers.

Community groups raising funds for a new hydrotherapy pool for the Hornby community have received a $400,000 grant from New Zealand Community Trust.

A community fundraising campaign to raise $1.4 million for a warm-water hydrotherapy pool has hit the halfway mark and is now ramping up a gear.
The Rotary Club of Hornby and the Greater Hornby Residents' Association are leading the campaign to raise funds for the hydrotherapy pool at Matatiki Hornby Centre, raising $700,000 so far.

Christchurch City Council is looking for an operator to lease the new cafe within the Matatiki Hornby Centre.
The café will be located in the reception area of the centre and will include an area for indoor and outdoor customer seating. Anyone interested in the opportunity to run the café can download the Request for Proposal documents via the Government Electronic Tender Service website. Proposals must be submitted by midday Wednesday 14 June 2023.

The Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board has voted to accept Ngāi Tūāhuriri's gifted name of Matatiki for the new community facility in Kyle Park, Hornby.
The new centre will be called Matatiki Hornby Centre, in line with the Council's naming convention for other similar facilities.
