Kahukura

Carved and painted by a whakairo class at Ngā Hau e Whā National Marae, under the guidance of Hona Taiapa. The artist Tania Te Moana drew on local geographical and botanical surroundings for her work. It depicts Kahukura, the rainbow god.

The carving is placed around a window and window seat, with three panels across the top and one down each side. The window and seat measure 60 x 312 cm.

A blessing ceremony for ‘Kahukura’, was held on 15 July 2002 during Te Wiki o te reo Māori (Māori Language Week) .
