Food and Drink in Christchurch City Libraries

March 2026

Welcome to Christchurch City Libraries.

We understand that food and drink may contribute to enjoyment of your visit to Christchurch City Libraries. Out of respect for the values of our customers our resources and equipment, we manage the consumption of food and drink in the library.

While food and drink is generally allowed, there are some restrictions:

  • Libraries are shared spaces, so beyond our cafés all food should be cold and odour-free.
  • All drinks should be in spill-proof containers to minimise the risk of damage to collections and equipment.
  • No food or drink is allowed in the same areas as our heritage and permanent collections. At Tūranga this includes the Tuakiri | Identity Floor. This reduces the risk of contamination of and damage to irreplaceable collections.
  • Our Pounamu Māori and Pasifika collections hold cultural knowledge and history. No food or drink is allowed in the same area as these collections.
  • Library equipment, including computers and creative technologies, is vulnerable to damage so no food or drink is allowed near them.

Please ask staff if you have any questions and thank you for your consideration.
