New Brighton Library is closed for improvements from Monday 25 September 2023 and is scheduled to reopen on Monday 27 November 2023.
Originally planned to close for seven weeks for a regular refurbishment, the popular seaside library will now reopen on Monday 27 November after Christchurch City Council discovered a number of issues with the building.

Alternative library services
Because New Brighton Library will be closed for a relatively short time, we won’t set up temporary library facilities in the area. The nearest alternative libraries are Parklands Library at 46 Queenspark Drive and Aranui Library at 109 Aldershot Street. The Mobile Library will visit New Brighton throughout the closure period (dates and times to be confirmed).

Salt on the Pier café
Salt on the Pier café will remain open as normal, although visitors won’t be able to enter via the main library foyer.
New Brighton's refurbishment
The update include layout changes, fixed joinery modification, flooring replacement (carpet, tiles), internal painting, LED lighting, soft furniture, window treatments, and refurbishment of the foyer bathroom.
Returning your books and picking up holds.
Items cannot be returned to New Brighton Library while it’s closed, but all Christchurch City Libraries items may be returned to any of our libraries around the city and Banks Peninsula.
From Monday 25 September, any hold items you’ve requested to be collected from New Brighton Library will be made available at Parklands Library instead, unless another location is requested. Please contact the library to arrange this.
All New Brighton items will be unavailable to the library network. Library staff will be temporarily reassigned to other Christchurch City Libraries.
Free wi-fi
Yes, the wi-fi will continue to work. Free wi-fi is also available at other Christchurch City Libraries.

All Agreed Support customers will be notified and individual arrangements put in place.
