Cemeteries of Christchurch

About the guides

These cemetery guides are based on cemetery tours that take place as part of yearly Heritage Week events. The guides are from the research and notes of Richard L. N. Greenaway. He writes:

It should be noted that the people who appear in the notes about inhabitants of graveyards have come to the writer's attention in a 30 year career as university student, genealogist and library worker. The people tend to be those who were well-known in their day or who, perhaps, became well-known through the circumstances of their deaths. Most people have ancestors about whom only a limited amount of prosaic information is available. Thus family historians should not expect that the library can provide the same amount of information as has been provided on the people who appear in the following notes.

If you are interested in tracing your family history the Christchurch City Libraries’ Family History guide will provide more information on the types of European New Zealand family history resources we hold or can access, what information you are going to find in those resources and when you need to look elsewhere. Our main focus is Christchurch and Canterbury information, from the 19th and early 20th century.
