Waruwarutū is a community space which holds the Ngā Pounamu Māori collection, a collection with special emphasis on Te Ao Māori. It is located on Tuakiri | Identity, Level 2, Tūranga.
The Māori collections in community libraries are also called Ngā Pounamu Māori.
Waruwarutū
‘Waruwarutū’ is the name given to the space where the Ngā Pounamu Māori collection is held. This name comes from significant Ngāi Tahu tīpuna Natanahira Waruwarutū and serves to elevate the mana of this space.
Ngā Pounamu Māori Collection
The Ngā Pounamu Māori Collection is made up of a lending collection, and some reference only materials and includes: Māori serials, te reo Māori resources, the Waitangi Collection, non-fiction, fiction, audio visual resources and more.
Ngā rākau teitei e iwa
The Ngāi Tahu Collection is named Ngā Rākau Teitei e Iwa, or The Nine Tall trees, which refers to the 8 land purchase claims plus the mahinga kai (or natural resources) settlements that formed the Ngāi Tahu Treaty of Waitangi Claim.
This collection, as part of the Ngā Pounamu Māori Collection was created to improve access to Ngāi Tahu material. The “claims” material and online index, Te Kerēme is a vital part of this collection along with key texts written by Ngāi Tahu authors or about Ngāi Tahu people and history.
