Brief History
Sydenham Cemetery was opened in 1896 but still has room for new burials. It is typical of older style cemeteries, featuring mostly large memorials with concrete surrounds, but it also allows for standard upright memorials and plaques on beams on the newer area.
The cemetery is now full except for burials in pre-purchased plots. Ash plots are available for pre-purchase. An ashes and full interment area has been developed on the site of the old Sexton's house.
There are a number of unmarked graves in Sydenham Cemetery, mostly patients of the former Sunnyside Hospital and there is a brief information panel outlining the cemetery’s history regarding this institution.
