Thanks to Ugly Hill Press and Lighthouse PR, we had a copy of Bold Types to give away. We asked entrants: What's the best thing about your favourite bookshop? The randomly selected winner was Zac McCallum who picked Scorpio Books: "The atmosphere. It just feels so nice to be in there!" Entries closed Sunday 20 October 5pm.
Top of the Pods podcasting competition for years 5 to 10
GCSN, Christchurch City Council Libraries, LOOP (Papanui Youth Development Trust) and Plains FM are excited to present Top of the Pods 2024, a podcasting competition where teams of ākonga from across greater Christchurch can create and submit their own podcast, learn new skills, and win awesome prizes - including up to $500 worth of podcasting equipment!
There are two categories for this year's competition: The Future is a Wonderful Place and Open. Teams can choose which category they would like to enter.
Schools or whānau from across the Greater Christchurch region can register teams of up to 12 tamariki in Years 5 - 10 with each team having until the end of the Term 3 school holidays to create and submit their own unique podcast (less that 20 minutes in length).

Ōtautahi is Flash WORD Christchurch competition
WORD is seeking a series of micro pieces of writing, from all ages, to be featured at The Crossing between August and October 2024 and it is part of WORD Christchurch Festival 2024 programme, from 27 August – 1 September.
What to submit: a memory, a scene, a moment in Ōtautahi
● Up to 100 words
● it could be microfiction, a prose poem or creative non-fiction
● tall tales, true stories or poetic moments about Ōtautahi/Christchurch
● in English and/ or te reo Māori

Win a copy of Freerange Press’s new book Shifting Foundations: Post-quake architecture of Ōtautahi Christchurch. Open to library customers, the competition closed on Monday 15 May at 5pm. The winner was drawn and announced on Wednesday 17 May 2023.
The winner was Alex van den Broek, who picked Tūranga as his favourite new building in Christchurch:
"Well it has to be Tūranga! It is completely free to walk in and you get treated like a human whenever you walk in. Most buildings that cost that sort of money would require a $100 ticket. I love the space, location, look, books and technology. But most of all I love the access."
Other entrants picked the Rehua building at the University of Canterbury, Ao Tawhiti, Te Pae, the Pacific Tower, the Observatory Hotel, and a special shout out for the SHIFT exhibition at the Canterbury Museum.

Tūranga’s Bookbots seek Earth names
Christchurch City Libraries launched a special online survey for local schools to help give names to Tūranga’s intergalactic heroes, the Bookbots.
During the month of July, local primary and intermediate students can vote on their favourite names for the digital characters and go in the draw to win prizes, including a real-life interactive robot for their school, with training provided by PBTech, and a class workshop with Imagination Station. Bluetooth speakers from Spark and giant Bookbot wall decals are also up for grabs.
Voting was open to local primary and intermediate students until 31 July 2018 (limited to one entry per student).
The grand prize, a real-life programmable Star Wars robot, was won by St Anne’s Catholic School, in Woolston. Read: Tūranga’s Bookbots get Earth names

#dinosinchch selfie competition
Dinosaur Footprints: A Story of Discovery was a national touring exhibition brought to you by GNS Science and New Zealand Oil & Gas and supported in Ōtautahi by Christchurch City Libraries. It was on from 14 November to 16 December at Fendalton Library. There was a competition - kids could snap a selfie at the exhibition and upload to social media with the hashtag #dinosinchch and be in to win cool dinosaur LEGO. Here are the winners.
